Herxheimer's reaction medical definition

An inflammatory reaction in tissues infected by spirochetes, as in syphilis or Lyme's disease, induced in certain cases by treatment with salvarsan, mercury, or antibiotics. Also called Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction.
